THE WATERBERG OBSERVATORY

CLIENT: Rory Sweet
SECTOR: Leisure, Hospitality & Sports
PROJECT: Identity Concept & Design
BACKGROUND: The Waterberg Observatory is a key feature of Leobo Private Reserve, and is situated within the main house. The identity takes its cue from the reserve's name Leobo, this is Northern Sotho for 'chameleon'. The fully automated copper dome houses two different types of telescopes - a 20 inch corrected Dahl Kirkham for looking at stars, Planets and Nebulae and an 8 inch Hydrogen Alpha scope for looking directly at the sun. Not only is the observatory used for guests’ enjoyment of the stars, it is capable of producing world class images, which makes it a prime tool for astronomical research.
